New appointment to support sustainable economic growth

Published: Tue, 04 Nov 2008 16:21:38

We have made a senior appointment to take forward policies that promote sustainable economic growth in the region.

Fiona Gough, in her role as Deputy Regional Director for Environment, will promote the Government's agenda on key areas including rural and energy issues, housing, planning and transport.

She will work with regional and local partners, supporting and challenging them in these areas to help them determine priorities, solve problems and deliver improvements for the region.

The work of Fiona and her group is joined up with the work of other parts of Government Office to support the sustainable growth in the economy of the North East through sound planning and taking account of the challenge of climate change.

Fiona Gough has experience of working at both national and regional level across a range of government departments and agencies in a strategy, policy and delivery capacity. She joined us from Natural England where she was Director of Strategy and Environmental Futures. Prior to this Fiona was Regional Manager for the Rural Development Service (RDS) in the North East.

She said "I was thrilled to get this job as it combines work on the individual policies for housing, transport planning and the environment with how they join up to support the economy of the North East and do so in ways that take account of the challenge of climate change. I am also keen to see how national policy is delivered in ways that reinforce the special character of places and communities in the North East."

Our Regional Director, Jonathan Blackie said "I am delighted that Fiona has joined us here at Government Office for the North East. Her role as Deputy Regional Director for Environment is a vital one to ensure the good partnership working between Whitehall and regional partners continues and I'm certain that with her extensive background in environmental issues her appointment will be a successful one."
