Free entry to hundreds of historic buildings and places

Published: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 13:40:55

Hundreds of historic buildings and places across the region will be opening their doors free of charge for Heritage Open Days (11-14 September).

Among the highlights will be a unique opportunity to see a collection of miners' lodge banners from around the Durham Coalfield, gathered specially for Heritage Open Days by the Bowburn Banner Group. Some of the banners are up to 100 years old and rarely seen in public. The banners on display range from the old to the new, including the Edith Cavell banner – Bowburn's first known banner – and the Bowburn Centenary Banner, designed in 2006 by residents of Bowburn to mark the centenary of the village.

Visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk for more information on specific sites, days and times.
