North East Climate Change Champion helps unveil Romania's Young Ambassadors

Published: Tue, 22 Apr 2008 15:12:14

The North East's Climate Change Champion Jack White has been helping spread the environmental message across Europe as he helped unveil the Romanian Young Ambassadors against Climate Change.

Jack was a special guest speaker at the Romanian Young Ambassadors against Climate Change awards ceremony at the British Ambassador's residence in Bucharest, representing the North East and UK as a whole.

During last week's visit he met Ms Raduta Matache, Secretary of State for the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Kim Barnett, British Ambassador for Romania and British MP Elliot Morley, former Environment Minister to discuss climate change issues.

Jack also took part in an international debate on climate change, held at the Romanian Senate in the historic Palace of Parliament, in Bucharest before being given a guided tour of the Palace.

Jack, of Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland, said:

"I was delighted and honoured to be given the chance to travel to Romania to attend the Romanian Young Ambassadors against Climate Change awards ceremony and was especially privileged because not only was I representing the North East region but also the other eight English Climate Change Champions.

"It was great to meet and talk with Ms Matache, the British Ambassador and Elliot Morley and I also enjoyed meeting the young ambassadors from Romania.

"I think it's important to encourage young people from all countries to make some positive steps towards tackling the problems associated with climate change. We need to get the message across that our world is changing rapidly and events and competitions such as this, and the one I took part in, are an ideal way to highlight this.

"The short presentation I gave to the Romanian young ambassadors gave them an insight into what the Climate Change Champions in England have achieved so far and, hopefully, provided them with some inspiring ideas as to what young people can do to actively tackle the threat to our planet from climate change."
