Heritage
English Heritage is funded by the Government to maintain the historic environment of England. It aims to help people understand and appreciate why the historic buildings and landscapes around them matter. From the first traces of civilisation, to the most significant buildings of the 20th century, English Heritage wants every important historic site to get the care and attention it deserves.
Museums, Libraries and Archives (MLA)
The MLA is the national development agency working for and on behalf of museums, libraries and archives. They advise the Government on policy and priorities for the sector. MLA's key activities are to provide strategic leadership, to act as a powerful advocate, to develop capacity and to promote innovation and change.
In the North East, MLA’s responsibilities are delivered through the Museums, Libraries and Archives North East. This is the regional strategic body and development agency for museum, library and archive organisations. Its role is to facilitate the sector's development across the region through leadership, advocacy, advice, exemplar projects and service delivery.
In the North East, we work closely with Museums, Libraries and Archives North East on a range of regional initiatives to ensure that the role of museums, libraries and archives is clearly understood, in particular its role in helping education and social inclusion.
We have worked closely with Museums, Libraries and Archives North East and Culture North East to establish a Regional Cultural Education Forum to provide strategic advice and advocate the use of culture and creativity in education and learning environments. The group has facilitated debates delivering cultural entitlement at a regional level, and has commissioned research that explores the impact of cultural activity on educational engagement and attainment.
