More information on the national picture
In February 2009, the Government announced a number of measures
aimed at ensuring that the current economic situation does not result in an
increase in burglaries.
The latest British Crime
Survey (July 2009) shows that:
-
police recorded acquisitive crime, decreased substantially
between 2007-08 and 2008-09
-
police recorded burglary was down by 4 per cent
and robbery down by 12 per cent. These decreases
are better than the national average.
In the North East we are overseeing the Prolific and
Priority Offenders Scheme and drugs intervention
programmes – these aim to reduce acquisitive crime across the
region, especially by the small number of persistent offenders, who
commit about half of all crime.
