Reducing the proportion of 16-18 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) is a priority for the Government. Being a NEET between the ages of 16-18 is a major predictor of later unemployment, low income, teenage motherhood, depression and poor physical health. No single agency holds all the keys to reducing NEET, local authorities, schools, the Learning and Skills Council, youth support services and employers all have key roles to play.
We are one of three lead agencies along with the Learning and Skills Council and One NorthEast, which support the 14-19 Regional Commission. One of the key priorities of the commission is supporting the reduction of young people aged 16 to 18 who are NEET.
We work with local authorities and their partners to help reduce the number of young people in the North East who are classified as NEET. We will do this with:
- robust data analysis
- identifying and sharing of what works, both locally and nationally
- identify funding opportunities to compliment local NEET strategies and action plans
- support and facilitate networks of expertise.
