Jonathan is the Government Office lead for the Department of Business and Enterprise and the management of European Structural Funds. He is a government observer on the Northern Way Steering Group and the Tyne and Wear City Region Executive Board.
He is the chair of four regional forums/boards:
- Interim Regional Transport Board
- Regional Resilience Forum
- North East Programme Management Committee for European Structural Funds
- New Writing North, the literature development agency for the North of England.
Jonathan's prevous positions include:

- Regional Director for English Partnerships
- Director of Newcastle City Challenge
- Regional Projects Manager for the Audit Commission.
