Launched in June, the futuristic studio marks the final stage of a
remarkable three year project to rebuild The Premises’ 14 studios and
save them from the developers.
The rebuilding of The Premises Studios cost £3m, part of which was funded by the
Government Office for London via the Shoreditch Trust New Deal for Communities Partnership.
Premises CEO Viv Broughton said “All the studios are now under one roof
in a new three storey building. The Premises has long been the most
used arts facility in east London and we’re delighted its future has
been secured.”
The official opening of the solar powered studio coincided with the 21st birthday of The Premises - started in 1985 as a single practice room for London’s jazz musicians. Over the years the laid-back reputation of the place grew and the number of studios multiplied. These days the complex is used by everyone from local
beginners to major stars like Franz Ferdinand and Beverley Knight.
Jamie Cullum calls The Premises “the best place in town”, and
legendary US record producer Bob Rose has already dubbed it “The
cleverest studio in Europe.”
Julia Craik, Studio Director says:
“The idea of a solar powered studio has certainly raised a few eyebrows
but it works brilliantly. We’ve been doing dry runs with bands like
Bloc Party and the audio quality is phenomenal. These days more and
more music artists are thinking about their ‘carbon footprint’, so it
was only a matter of time before a fully fledged eco-studio became a
reality.”
