Mayor Ken Livingstone speaks at the pan-London launch with GOL stand in the background

London gets a spring cleaning

The Government Office for London was at the heart of setting up the launch of London clean-up on 7th March at City Hall in liaison with the Greater London Authority, Associated London government, Metropolitan Police and Housing Corporation. The clean-up is a significant initiative to foster partnership working across sectors to improve the capital's environment and combat anti-social behaviour, crime and reduce the fear of crime.

Regional Director Liz Meek shared the chair of the event with the GLA which was attended by over 100 anti social behaviour leading figures and practitioners.

The launch featured speeches by Ken Livingstone, Home Office minister Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, Sir Robin Wales, Chief Superintendent Stephen Bloomfield and Bob Holt, chairman of Mears, a leading private firm involved in maintaining council and housing association properties. GOL’s business crime advisers were instrumental in securing business sponsorship through Mears. Mears are working with partners across seven boroughs already including Richmond Housing Partnership on clean up and anti social behaviour activities. Borough representatives from Waltham Forest, Camden and Richmond also showcased good practice through stands and videos.

Hazel Blears singled out GOL for praise for its work in linking with partners to tackle anti social behaviour and promote the respect agenda.
