More than 100 women across the capital are undertaking NVQ level 1 and 2 training in childcare and youth work along with work experience placements. The project is run by a partnership led by Account3 Women's Consultancy, which also includes Back to Basics Somali Refugee Training, Ocean Somali Community Association and Somali Teachers Group.
The Government Office for London’s (GOL) European Unit manages the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and the ESF in London. The project is funded by the London Learning and Skills Councils through the ESF Pan-London Programme.
The Programme targets wards in 13 of the most disadvantaged boroughs and aims to create a more dynamic economic environment by encouraging business creation and survival , improving the competitiveness of existing businesses and increasing business investment and economic growth. It also focuses on getting people into work and improving skills whether employed or self-employed.
The women – many lone parents and former refugees - are now equipped with the skills, qualifications, confidence and experience to find and stay in employment.
Sofia, a Somali beneficiary, said
"I am studying towards my NVQ Level 2 in Childcare. The project helps women whatever their backgrounds, I am really enjoying my work experience and hope to gain full time employment when I am qualified. This course will definitely help me in the future".
GOL arranged for Mr Plaskitt to visit the Account3 training centre in Bethnal Green where he presented awards to recognise the progress made by the women. He said:
‘These women have worked very hard to get to this stage. Many of them are refugees from war-torn Somalia and had to face considerable hardships in order to build a new life in an alien country.
The Somali community in London faces a host of challenges and is one of its poorest ethnic groups. This project plays an instrumental role in fostering the integration of Somali women in the capital.
