CASH INJECTION TO TACKLE GANG CULTURE CRIME IN CAPITAL
CASH INJECTION TO TACKLE GANG CULTURE CRIME IN CAPITAL
Government Office for London (GOL) will give money to ten projects to tackle gun, gang and knife crime in London it was announced in November. Administering money from the Home Office GOL will give nearly a quarter of a million pounds from the Recycled Criminal Assets Fund.
The money, seized from criminals, will be made available to groups working in the areas worst affected by gun, gang and knife crime as part of the Government’s drive to use the proceeds of crime to beat crime. It will fund both immediate and preventative action delivered by a range of bodies including leading police organisations and community based groups such as From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation in Southwark.
The From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation was established in 1996 to address growing concerns within Southwark communities about the number of young black boys being excluded from school and becoming involved with gangs, drugs and violence. Another such scheme to benefit will be the Brent Mediation Project, which will train community leaders to reach potential gun users before they use violent means as a way to settle disputes. The project aims to incorporate best practice from mediators who have worked with Loyalists paramilitaries in Northern Ireland.
The ten projects to be awarded funding operate mainly in Lambeth, Newham, Southwark, Haringey, Brent and Hackney.
Roger King, Regional Crime Director for London said: “I am delighted to be able to announce the funding of these truly promising projects which offer innovative solutions to the sort of problems which all too often blight a number of our neighbourhoods and communities. I believe they can make a significant contribution to safety in the capital”
This follows the Drug and Crime Summit which took place in June this year, where new initiatives to cut crime across the capital by 20 per cent over the next three years were launched by GOL’s Crime and Drugs division.
