LONDON PROJECTS PROGRESS GROWTH AREA FUNDING

Projects to develop new housing in eight London boroughs were announced on 24th August by Housing and Planning Minister Yvette Cooper; over 70 projects have been provisionally earmarked for growth area funding across London and the south east. Government Office for London has worked closely with eligible boroughs, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and other key partners in London to encourage submission of bids for projects.

This is the second round of growth area funding – the first followed the publication of the Sustainable Communities Plan in February 2003, when £164 million was provided for the Milton Keynes/South Midlands, Ashford, and London-Stansted-Cambridge-Peterborough growth areas over three years from 2003 to 2006.

In March 2005 further funding was announced over the two years from 2006 to 2008 to support the creation of sustainable communities across those three growth areas.

In addition to Enfield, Haringey, Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Hackney, three new London boroughs were invited to bid for second round funds: Barnet, Brent and Islington. These were announced as ‘Opportunity Boroughs’ by then Housing Minister, Keith Hill, in January 2005 as having the potential to deliver significant numbers of homes above the targets set out in the Mayor’s London Plan.

Bidders will also be able to access advice from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) to help ensure that the highest design standards are achieved when putting final submissions together.

Announcing the provisional allocations Yvette Cooper said:

"We need to build more homes so that the next generation of first time buyers can afford a place of their own. But they need to be homes in sustainable communities not just dormitories. That is why we are investing £200m in new infrastructure and community facilities in the areas where new homes will be built.”

The deadline for bids is the end of November and final decisions on which projects will receive Government money will be made in the early New Year, with the aim that projects will be up and running by April 2006.
