In June 2005, GOL’s European unit hosted a European Programmes delegation from the Netherlands. The tour included meeting their UK equivalents and visiting a few of the London projects that have benefited from European funds administered by GOL.
The project visits began with Leaside Regeneration, which is helping to revive the economy of the Lower Lea Valley. There are currently four projects which receive £800,000 to improve premises for local community organisations and community businesses.
Next on the itinerary was the New Vic in Stratford, which has received £278,000 for refurbishing part of Newham Sixth Form College to support new business, including the expansion of ‘incubation units’ for local residents and former students.
Before departing for a reception at the Dutch embassy, the delegation stopped off for a tour of the Firepower Museum in Woolwich. It is the focal point of the regeneration of the waterfront. The museum has received £1.75 million towards refurbishing the site’s buildings, to house the Royal Artillery’s collection of military equipment and provide training space for the local community.
Alex Conway, GOL’s Head of European Programmes, said:
“It was useful and informative for our team to meet our Dutch counterparts and share best practice. The tour was an excellent opportunity to show how European funding is making a real difference to some of the most deprived communities in the capital.”
