The Framework was steered by the London Woodland Advisory Group, chaired by the Forestry Commission and consisting of a wide partnership of which the Government Office for London was a prominent member. GOL has also provided considerable expertise and resources to the final preparation of the Framework.
Trees and woodlands are an essential part of London’s character and identity, yet management of these areas has deteriorated over the years. The Framework seeks to ensure that existing trees and woodlands are managed and maintained properly in order to safeguard their value to London both now and in the future.
Lord Clark, Chair of the Forestry Commission, said:
‘The management of existing woodland is a major priority of the Framework. There is an increasing understanding of the value of woodlands for social, environmental and economic benefit. There is a greater demand for recreation but at the same time, a lack of management and a reduction in the appropriate skills is in danger of putting these woodlands into long term damage.’
Other objectives in the London Tree and Woodland Framework include:
* Improving the accessibility of London’s woodlands and promoting the benefits of trees and woodlands to physical and spiritual health and well-being.
* Promoting the important contribution of trees and woodlands to London’s sustainable development and regeneration.
* Ensuring the needs and impacts of trees and woodlands are properly addressed in an ever more compact city.
