The event was held in conjunction with the Teenage Pregnancy Unit, Department for Education and Skills and Regional Public Health Group. It aimed to kick-start a programme of work to better understand the London specific issues involved in delivering this challenging agenda.
Representatives from a cluster of 12 London Boroughs (Barking & Dagenham, Brent, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest) were invited. They were asked to consider the Teenage Pregnancy Unit’s analysis and other research, and begin to identify issues and barriers, gather evidence of good practice and develop suggestions for future joint working.
Chairing the conference, GOL Regional Director Liz Meek said:
“I want this event to be the beginning of collaborative action between us. What we can achieve can help us towards a shared understanding of the context and issues related to high teenage conception rates and poor sexual health in London. I want us to build on that work together in the future.”
A working group comprised of representatives from Government Office for London, Greater London Authority, Association of London Government, London Challenge, strategic Health Authorities, Teenage Pregnancy Unit and Regional Public Health Group are continuing to meet to discuss the issues arising from the event. The aim is to help front line practitioners make some inroads into this agenda, particularly in those boroughs with high teenage pregnancy rates.
