South Kilburn NDC has access to £50m of GOL administered NDC money, to support its ten-year programme to tackle social exclusion and improve the quality of life in the neighbourhood.
South Kilburn is one of the most disadvantaged areas in London, but is well on the way to being a London regeneration success story, highlighting the value of effective joint work between local people, Brent Council and other service providers, through the vehicle of the New Deal partnership.
The laying of the foundation stone marks the beginning of a new stage of regeneration for the area, where more than 1,500 social homes are being demolished and replaced alongside the refurbishment of more than 700 more. A further 1,400 private homes will also be built for sale, to help fund the regeneration and broaden the social diversity of the area.
Keith Hill, Minister for Housing said:
“This is a very exciting day for housing and regeneration in South Kilburn. The stone I have laid marks the start of important work, that will see the community provided with more housing. Local people have been instrumental in this project and this should ensure a better community for all.”
