Playing it Safe

GOL’s Crime Reduction Director Roger King visited Oaklands School in Bethnal Green in January 2005 to help launch the SAFE Week.

He spoke to young people aged between 11–14 years old at their school assembly where he reminded them they should keep their personal possessions hidden and safe.

The highlight of the day was a 15 minute performance of the SAFE play conducted by the National Youth Theatre, which included safety messages about theft.

Following the assembly, Roger King spoke to a small group of young people and gave them tips on how to keep their mobile phones and MP3 players safe, whilst photographers from the Tower Hamlets Recorder, East End Life and East London Advertiser clicked away with their cameras.

Roger King said:

“I was inspired by the positive reaction of the young people to the effective National Youth Theatre presentation. From the small group I spoke to, two had been subject to robbery or attempted robbery and most had taken positive steps to keep themselves safe.  I hope all young people and schools take this issue equally seriously.”
