Housing Delivery Plan for the Capital

Housing delivery in the capital received a boost in January 2005 when former Minister for London Keith Hill unveiled the London Housing Delivery Plan (LHDP) at the CBI Conference Centre.

The LHDP has been jointly developed between the Government Office for London (GOL), the Greater London Assembly (GLA), and the Association of London Government (ALG) to deliver a step change in housing supply, increase the profile of housing delivery, and to clarify key activities already taking place.

Representatives attended the event from a wide range of housing organisations including Local Authorities, the GLA, English Partnerships, the Housing Corporation, and the private sector.

The London Housing Strategy sets the context for the Housing Delivery Plan. The Strategy is about creating mixed and balanced communities and increasing the supply of new homes of appropriate sizes across all tenures so that more people can be housed. Social and capital infrastructure will be needed in order to support this growth and to create well-designed sustainable communities.

Speaking at the launch the Minister said:

“The aim of the London Housing Delivery Plan is to deliver the homes needed within the wider aspirations of the government’s Sustainable Communities Plan, and the London Housing Strategy being developed by the London Housing Board – our common aim being the creation of mixed and balanced communities where people want to live now and in the future”

He also announced the launch of the Opportunity Boroughs initiative. These are Local Authorities in London which appear to have the potential and ability to deliver significant growth.

Keith Hill said:

“We have already begun work with Brent, Barnet, Islington and Barking and Dagenham. We are working with these boroughs to deliver growth and a significant uplift against existing planning targets – we confidently expect others to come on board.”
