Regional Planning

The Mayor of London has responsibility for strategic planning in London and in particular for producing a spatial development strategy (SDS) for London. This provides a strategic framework for borough local plans and sets out the spatial context for the Mayor’s other policies and strategies.

Government Offices work with regional partners to develop, implement and monitor ‘Regional Spatial Strategies,’ which set out Government’s planning and transport policy for each region for a 15-20 year period. The strategies provide frameworks for determining planning applications, as well as for preparing both Local Development Documents and Local Transport Plans. More information on the national picture

The Government Office for London has the responsibility, on behalf of the Secretary of State, to ensure that Mayoral strategies, including the SDS, are consistent with national policies.

The Secretary of State has no role in approving the SDS but does have powers to direct changes to the SDS in certain limited circumstances as well as direct that the SDS be reviewed, altered or replaced.

The Mayor also has a role in relation to planning applications. See the Mayor's Planning Powers link below for more information.
