Biodiversity

London is a remarkably green city. Green spaces and water occupy two-thirds of London's land area. Of this, about a third is private gardens; a third parks or in sports use and a further third is other wildlife habitats, such as grasslands, woodlands and rivers.

These green spaces support a tremendous variety of plants and animals. The diversity of London's wildlife is illustrated by the fact that over 1500 species of flowering plants and 300 types of birds have been seen here in recent years.

The Mayor's proposals for promoting and protecting biodiversity in London are set out in his Biodiversity Strategy which can be viewed in the GLA website below.

In addition, the London Biodiversity Partnership’s aim is to retain and enhance all of London’s habitats which are vital elements of Londoners’ quality of life. The Partnership is made up of members from the public, private and voluntary sector and for more information visit the Partnership’s website below.
