Air Quality

National policies on air pollution are expected to deliver a significant improvement in air quality throughout the country. However there is an important local dimension to air quality.

In some locations in London, air quality problems occur because of local factors such as density of traffic, geography, topography etc. Such ‘hot spots’ require a more focussed approach to ensure their elimination. In these circumstances local authorities have a specific role to play. The Environment Act 1995 sets out a new system of Local Air Quality Management in which local authorities take the lead.

If you wish to check your local authority's progress on local air quality management and see if your local authority has had to declare an air quality management area, please access the NETCEN (Air Quality) website below.

The Mayor’s proposals for improving air quality in London are set out is his Air Quality Strategy which can be viewed on the GLA website.
