Arts and Creative Industries

The Department of Culture, Media and Sports’ aim for the Arts is to maximise the contribution from the Arts sector to the Secretary of State’s four strategic points: Children and Young People; Communities; the Economy; and Delivery, and through this to improve the quality of life of all through the Arts.

The aim of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is to maximise the contribution of the arts sector, and through this to improve the quality of life of all. It also works with the creative industries, which are those industries with their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property. More information on the national picture

We assist the creative industries by raising their profile and helping them achieve their full economic potential.

London’s creative industries include:

  • Advertising
  • Architecture
  • Arts and antiques markets
  • Computer games, software and electronic publishing
  • Crafts
  • Design
  • Fashion
  • Music, visual and performing arts
  • Publishing
  • Radio and TV
  • Video, film and photography.

The creative industries are one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy.

They now:

  • Generate more than £112.5 billion in revenue
  • Account for 9.2 per cent of GDP

In the UK

  • 2 million people are employed in the creative industries
  • Exports account for 9 per cent of revenue, or £10.3 billion.

This pattern of growth is repeated throughout the industrialised world and creates a huge new world market in which the UK is a global player. The value of exports relating to the creative industries has increased more rapidly than total UK exports. The DCMS Mapping Document 2001 estimated £1 billion of annual design exports; and the Academy of St Martin’s in the Fields is the only orchestra to have received the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement.
