The LYCPB secretariat organised a Summit in May during which a number of potential work streams were discussed and identified. The Summit was attended by senior figures from the police, local authorities, children’s services, the voluntary sector, youth and criminal justice, and key Government Departments.
The LYCPB has an independent Chair, Lord Victor Adebowale, who is the Chief Executive of Turning Point, and met for the first time on the 31st July. The Board is well placed to make a reality in London of cross-Government multi-agency work on preventing youth crime. The Board’s membership is now formalised and is a broad coalition of agencies from across prevention and enforcement and includes senior figures from: local authorities; children’s services; the Metropolitan Police; schools; the Youth Justice Board; the GLA; London Councils; London Criminal Justice Board; and the voluntary sector. The Regional Director of Government Office for London (which is hosting the LYCPB Secretariat) is also on the Board, along with regional leads on children’s, schools and crime policy.
The Board have now decided upon focussing on the following work streams:
- Securing the voice and influence of young people
- Achieving change through Local Area Agreements*
- Reducing victimisation and understanding data sources
- Schools and youth crime prevention
- Maximising the impact of Every Child Matters
- Tackling BME Over Representation in the Youth Justice System
- Strengthening Leadership and Ensuring Coherence
- Improving Our Knowledge Base
The Board is set to run for eighteen months and will develop and lead the delivery of a programme of action for improving the prevention of youth crime in the capital. A final report summarizing action instigated during the lifetime of the Board and recommendations for future action will also be produced. LYCPB have now produced a newsletter following their first meeting.
LYCPB’s Secretariat is based within the Children & Learners Division in GOL. If you would like to know more about the work of the Board and/or even influence work in this respect, please contact the Secretariat directly using the contact information at the bottom of the page.
