Transport impacts on everyone's lives. Improving the transport system and its operation is a critical element in the Government’s economic, social and environmental agenda. Better access to jobs and services, particularly for those most in need, is a priority shared between local and central government, and a core aspect of Government Office work.

The Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) aims to improve transport across the East Midlands. We achieve this in a number of different ways by:
- Improving the rail network
We liaise with Network Rail on rail issues such as Route Utilisation Strategies relating to the Midland Mainline and East Coast Main Line. This involves the examination of the capacity and capability of current routes and how timetables can be restructured to make the best use of them.
- Integrating various modes of transport and developing long term solutions
GOEM project managed four Multi-Modal Studies to achieve both these aims.
- Funding longer term transport strategies
We help determine funding for local transport measures and to monitor progress in delivery of their Local Transport Plans. These are five year strategies for the development of local, integrated transport, supported by a programme of transport improvements.
- Improving the road network
GOEM works with other government agencies such as the Highways Agency who is responsible for looking after the regions trunk roads and motorways such as the M1, M69 and the A1.
We also work with local authorities, other regional bodies, the public and businesses on a range of other issues such as cycling, buses, road safety and statutory casework.
