Government Offices make a vital contribution to the Government’s commitment to thriving, vibrant, sustainable communities. Communities and Local Government's Sustainable Communities Plan will affect every region of England, providing homes for key workers, regenerating towns and cities and providing parks for families and children. Above all, the plan is about helping people to live where they want to and having pride in their community.
More information on the national picture
The Government Office for the East Midlands (GO-EM) has several ways in which it helps to improve communities. Some details are listed below but more detailed information can be found by clicking on the links at the bottom of the page.
Sustainable communities
We do this in a number of ways, including working to improve living standards in deprived areas, providing affordable housing and developing better facilities.
Neighbourhood Renewal
We work very closely with partners to ensure a co-ordinated approach to neighbourhood renewal across the region. Amongst other programmes, we support Community Empowerment Networks (CEN's). CEN's provide funding to help voluntary and community sector groups to play an active role in delivering neighbourhood renewal in their areas.
Housing
GO-EM promotes the government’s policy on providing decent homes for all.
Drugs and Alcohol
Our work for drug prevention involves identifying and promoting best practice across all areas of drugs prevention. We have promoted conferences and seminars on reducing drug supply and cutting drug-related crime. We have nine-multi agency Drug Action Teams in the region.
Social Inclusion
This work involves many different departments within GO-EM. We aim to tackle problems such as unemployment, poor skills, health inequalities, discrimination and crime to make our communities better places to live and work.
Community Cohesion
We’re committed to creating strong communities with a common vision. This means that we’ve worked on a variety of strategies aimed at celebrating people’s differing backgrounds and at building strong relationships between people of differing circumstances.
Voluntary and Community Sector
Our work towards building active communities sees us supporting voluntary and community organisations in the region and working towards promoting volunteering and mentoring.
