The Regional Plan provides an East Midlands-wide planning framework that addresses the unique needs of the region.
Speaking after the publication of the final version of the Plan, issued by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government,
The Minister said:
"The publication of this Plan represents an important milestone in helping to secure sustainable growth in the East Midlands.
I know the credit crunch is making life very difficult for many homeowners, for people trying to get onto the property ladder and for house builders. Despite the current difficulties in the market, the number of households in the East Midlands is growing and to keep up with the rise in demand, we do need to provide more homes. While I am totally committed to helping people and businesses with the problems they have today, it is very important that we continue to plan for the future, including the new homes we need."
The Regional Plan has the potential to touch the lives of everyone living in the East Midlands and is an important part of the long term plan for the region."
The Minister also acknowledged work that is being undertaken on a further Partial Review of the Regional Plan:
"Today's publication of the new East Midlands Plan is very important, but there is always more to do. There is also a Partial Review of the Regional Plan currently taking place. This review will build on the Plan published today and cover a number of very important issues including growth, further updating housing numbers, affordable homes, transport and a coastal strategy for Lincolnshire. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work now being devoted to this exercise by the East Midlands Regional Assembly and their partners and would like to strongly encourage everyone with an interest to support and get involved with this work."
