The event itself is trying to be as sustainable as possible through carbon offsetting against emissions caused by the event, sourcing local food and by taking place at a venue very close to main public transport routes.
EXPO is organised by a partnership of the East Midlands Centre for the Built Environment (emcbe), Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM), East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) and East Midlands Development Agency (emda).
There are three main themes at this years' EXPO
- Construction & Manufacturing
- Saving Energy
- Food and Drink
The programme of seminars, workshops and presentations from key speakers is available from the EMRA website below.
Four winning schools will be presented with prizes after taking part in 'Shopping for the future'. The competition that encouraged pupils to think about sustainable consumption by considering what their classroom is made from or if their classroom is future friendly. The competition was organised for EXPO by the East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools who aim to support schools, engage with and respond to the challenges of globalisation and sustainable development. Purchasing and waste is one of the areas highlighted in the current DfES consultation on Sustainable Schools.
The prizes will be presented at EXPO by the Mayor of The City of Derby, Councillor John Ahern, and include certificates in frames made of wood from sustainably managed forests, plus copies of the CD 'Wild about the Woods', donated by the Woodland Trust.
On show at the event will be environmentally friendly vehicles including a green bus, courtesy of the National Energy Foundation, and a special racing car which runs on biofuel.
