The money comes from BIG’s Family Learning programme which helps parents understand more about how their children learn and encourages adults and children to develop new skills as a family.
Connecting Families will provide a wide range of activities and courses for vulnerable families affected by domestic crises, bullying and other family issues and traumas from across Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. The programme will be run by Derbyshire County Council Adult Community Education Service which will be taking referrals from including children’s centres, social services, North Derbyshire Women’s Aid and Home-Start.
Families referred to Connecting Families can expect to learn new communication, social, literacy and numeracy skills through plenty of exciting courses. Initially families will get to participate in an outdoor taster day including team building, outdoor pursuits, environmental education and survival. The taster days will be followed up by a series of courses over a number of weeks including active crafts, local research and heritage activities.
Derbyshire County Council strategic director for children and younger adults services Bruce Buckley said:
“We are delighted by the opportunities which this Big Lottery grant for the Connecting Families project will bring. For the next three years it will provide a range of new, fulfilling and exciting activities for some of the most vulnerable families in Derbyshire. With our voluntary sector partners we can work with volunteers and community members in bringing real pleasure, learning and opportunity to parents and children.”
Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund’s East Midlands Head of Region said:
“Through Connecting Families many vulnerable children, young people and parents across North Derbyshire will be able to share new positive experiences, enjoy being active and creative and build better family relationships. The funding announced today will bring real benefits to the families involved.”
