Department for Transport (East Midlands)(DFT) Major train order for Derby train builder confirmed

Published: Fri, 03 Apr 2009 10:30:11

Jobs will be safeguarded at Derby based train builder, Bombardier Transportation UK Ltd, thanks to a new agreement between the Department for Transport and National Express East Anglia, (NXEA), Transport Secretary, Geoff Hoon, announced today

Government funding is being used to allow NXEA to add 188 more carriages to their fleet, of which 120 will be newly built by Bombardier, primarily for use on the Stansted Express route.

NXEA have confirmed that Bombardier Transportation UK Ltd was successful in the procurement competition to provide this fleet of trains and contracts for this have now been signed.

Geoff Hoon said

"I am delighted that Bombardier was able to secure this £155m contract. Not only is it good news for the workers at Derby as will help safeguard their jobs but it is also good news for rail passengers in East Anglia.

"The Government is funding this major boost to rail capacity as part of its commitments to a growing railway as set out in the Rail White Paper of 2007, and the benefits of such an approach are clear to both rail passengers and UK suppliers."
