Call 101 in Harborough

Published: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 10:39:25

A total of 264 people dialled 101 in July to report incidents of anti-social behaviour in the Harborough district. The most popular reasons for calling were problems with drunk and rowdy people (48% of calls), noisy neighbours and loud parties (15%) and vandalism and graffiti (12%).

Of the 264 calls, the most reported were:

  • anti-social behaviour
  • vehicles causing a nuisance
  • trespassing and underage drinking in Lutterworth
  • vandalism caused by drunken youths and inappropriate driving on a playing field in Fleckney
  • rowdy and intimidating behaviour outside the shops in Thurnby
  • dangerous and nuisance mini moto and quad bike driving in Scraptoft

Councillor Graham Hart, leader of the Executive of Harborough District Council, said:

"Incidents of anti-social behaviour are a relatively small occurring problem in our district, but that is no consolation for our residents when they are confronted with it. Especially those affected from large groups of rowdy young people or at night, by residents living on their own. We are really pleased that there has been a 50% increase in calls since our last report and would encourage anyone experiencing anti-social behaviour to call 101 straight away so that we and the police can target specific areas, at specific times to further increase our efforts to make the community safer for everyone.

"Recent use of this service by residents in Great Bowden, has seen an increase in police presence within the vicinity of the Recreation ground at night and has been so far successful in combating the recent increase of anti-social behaviour by a small group of individuals."

Currently, information about 101 is being dropped through the doors of the majority of homes in Harborough district.
101 is the new 24 hour non-emergency telephone number being piloted in Leicester city, Rutland, Melton and Harborough. Run by Leicestershire Police and Harborough District Council, the service provides callers with advice and appropriate action to deal with problems including abandoned vehicles, fly tipping, and threatening behaviour.
Calls to 101 cost 10 pence from landlines and mobiles. Phone lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
