Current champion John Reynolds, threw his full weight behind the THINK! motorcycle safety campaign - Official Supporter of this year's Bennetts British Superbike Championship - for a second year. The campaign will have a major on-the-ground presence at every race in conjunction with the police BikeSafe initiative to introduce riders to expert advice and assessment.
Latest figures for 2003 show that 703 motor cycle users were killed or seriously injured on the roads in the East Midlands (Derbyshire 163, Leicestershire 91, Lincolnshire 118, Northamptonshire 122, Nottinghamshire 209).
John Reynolds said:
"With the competition for the Bennetts British Superbike Championship as strong as it has ever been, I'm very excited to get out there and race hard for every point. I'm also delighted to continue to support the THINK! motorcycle safety campaign. Bike safety is an integral part of every rider's life and if you are coming to Silverstone I hope you take time to visit the THINK! stand."
Road Safety Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman said:
"Sports bike riding is growing in popularity with many bikers riding for the sheer fun of it. But all too often it can have tragic consequences. Leisure riders need to be aware of the risks involved and what they can do to minimise the dangers they face.
"The THINK! campaign's support for the British Superbikes Championship allows us to continue to engage with motorcyclists and get important safety messages across directly to those at risk.
"I want bikers to save racing for the track and to remember the roads can be a dangerous place."
This will be the THINK! campaign's second year of involvement in the British Superbike Championship and this year their stand at every race will be bigger, better and well worth a visit. The stand will feature a new bike simulator, giving fans a chance to pit their wits against the top riders. The top riders will also be making regular appearances at the stand to support the THINK! campaign.
