Minister for the East Midlands goes green to boost the region’s health

Published: Wed, 28 May 2008 13:15:53

Minister for the East Midlands Phil Hope took the green option by cycling to a public health conference in Derby.

The minister joined almost 500 health experts to debate how to deliver better health for the people of the region in an eco-friendly fashion.

The annual Regional Public Health Conference Healthy Region: Healthy Planet which was held at the Riverside Centre, Derby yesterday.

Opening the conference, Phil Hope said,

“Tackling social exclusion and reducing health inequalities are issues integral to my remit as regional minister.

“This annual conference provides a great platform to help make progress in addressing inequality, and where we can, clearly identify and define the groups or communities at risk, understand their specific needs, plan to meet those needs and work together and constantly review whether what we do is working.

“I’m delighted that the conference has such as strong focus on sustainability as environmental factors like climate change, air pollution, access to safe green space and affordable public transport can impact adversely on health and well-being.”

The conference was a carbon-neutral event, with delegates encouraged to arrive by public transport and offset their carbon footprints if they travelled by car.
