Exhibitions to show route options for new M1/M69 road link at Leicester

Published: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 10:18:11

Options for providing a new link road between the M1 at J21 and the M69 near Leicester have been published by the Highways Agency who want to hear the views of local people.

The exhibition will show two new route options, both of which would involve use of land currently occupied by the Leicester Forest East motorway service area. The Highways Agency is involved in direct discussion with the service area operators as the plans develop.

The previous four options, which are not being taken forward at this time, are routes to the north and south of the Leicester Forest East Motorway Service Area, a large viaduct to take the southbound link road over the motorway, and a link road north of the services with complex slip roads at J21A. These four options are being included in the exhibition for comparison purposes.

People will be able to see the plans at Braunstone Civic Centre, Kingsway, Braunstone, on Friday 2 March from 2pm to 8pm and Stafford Leys Community Primary School, Stafford Leys, Leicester, on Saturday 3 March between 11am and 5pm.

The consultation will end on 1 May 2007.

The next stage is the announcement of a preferred route, which the Highways Agency hopes to make by the end of the year. Draft Orders and an Environmental Statement are due to be published in the summer of 2008. A Public Inquiry would be held in 2009 if required and work start towards the end of 2010.
