“Give young people a break” – Minister’s plea

Published: Wed, 02 Dec 2009 15:36:36

Minister for the East Midlands Phil Hope MP has issued a call to action to employers in the region to give young people their first break in the world of work.

The Minister is fronting a campaign - ‘Backing Young East Midlands’ - aimed at encouraging organisations to offer work trials, volunteer places, apprenticeships or other opportunities to young people in the region.

The Minister said:

“There are enormous benefits to offering a young person that crucial first break, for the employer as well as the young person themselves.

“Young people bring fresh ideas and vibrancy to the workforce and can inject new life into an organisation. Most of them are keen to work but need to be given a chance. By signing up to the campaign you can pledge your support to help this generation fulfil its potential. You can even sign up if you are already doing one of these things. ”

The Minister launched the campaign last month at Leicestershire engineering company Slack and Parr. Jobcentre Plus, the National Apprenticeship Service, Government Office for the East Midlands, the Prince’s Trust and the Learning and Skills Council are all sponsoring the campaign.
