Rt Hon Lord Rooker meets school children

Education and Skills

We work with local organisations across the East Midlands towards the achievement of Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) targets to ensure that educational attainment is central to local community strategies.

Government Offices have an important role in helping the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) deliver its education strategy for the next five years and beyond. It focuses on giving children an excellent start in education, enabling young people to equip themselves with life and work skills, and encouraging adults to achieve their full potential through learning. GOEM's role:

  • We work with local and regional organisations and partnerships such as local authorities, the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the regional Learning and Skills Councils (LSC) to put Government policies on skills and workforce development into practice.
  • We encourage organisations to work together to get the most from the resources and share best practise.
  • We play an important role in the financial and performance monitoring of programmes such as Connexions and Positive Activities for Young People

Our priorities are:

  • educational achievement - focusing on priority areas in the region to help raise standards in educational achievement
  • behaviour and attendance - identifying and sharing good practice. We have also supported new approaches to improving behaviour and attendance through targeting specific schools
  • adult skills - support for Skills for Life (basic skills such as reading and numeracy) and partnership working
