Growth Areas

The Growth Areas Team is working to “achieve a better balance between housing availability and the demand for housing, including improving affordability, in all English regions while protecting valuable countryside around our towns, cities and in the green belt and the sustainability of towns and cities” (PSA5).

In particular, the team is working with local and regional partners to address barriers to sustainable growth including developing and managing Communities and Local Government (CLG) funded projects to help bring forward needed development and deliver sustainable communities.

We support a wide range of partners in making rapid progress to achieve the step change, implement sustainable development within the London-Stansted-Cambridge-Peterborough and the Luton and Bedfordshire part of the Milton Keynes South Midlands Growth Areas, and provide a regional input to the development of Thames Gateway.

The team is dedicated to harnessing the potential of the Growth Areas. Our role involves working with partners to develop sustainable communities, and achieve better synergy between regeneration and growth, with the aim of raising quality of life for all.

The focus is on building partnerships for change and providing partners with the tools and resources to make the difference, ensuring an integrated approach to the delivery of sustainable communities.

Main work areas include:

  • Working with partners to assist in developing sub regional strategies for key growth locations.
  • Working with partners on progressing and implementing Local Delivery Vehicles.
  • Managing and monitoring the region’s Growth Areas funded projects - inviting bids, and providing growth areas funding for key projects that can assist in achieving the step change, and deliver sustainable communities.
  • Supporting and promoting cross-sector working with a range of partners on key strategic projects that will help to raise understanding and attain a more integrated approach to achieving the development of sustainable communities e.g. skills and education, green spaces projects and Liveability pilots, Health and design.
  • Working with partners to promote quality of design and development and promotion of urban renaissance and need for improved design quality in the growth areas.
  • Supporting and promoting the development of the Regional Centre of Excellence – Inspire: East.
