Government Offices make a vital contribution to the Government’s commitment to develop thriving, vibrant, sustainable communities. The ‘Sustainable Communities Plan’ (published by the then Office of the Deputy Prime Minister), will affect every region as part of the Government’s drive to raise the quality of life in our communities through increasing prosperity, reducing inequalities, producing more employment, better public services and better health and education.

the Sustainable Communities programme is of particular importance to Government Office for the East of England. We have been working with local authorities, East of England Development Agency, English Partnerships, Learning and Skills Councils, Housing Corporations, CABE, and Sport England among others to develop networks and a shared understanding of the involvement and resources available within the region to the agenda.
We have a specific focus on the following priority places - growth locations where the Government Office for the East of England is targeting extra resources, working with local partners:
- Luton / Dunstable / Houghton Regis sub region
- Thames Gateway South Essex
- Harlow and surroundings
- Peterborough
Our priorities include:
- Ensuring effective cross team working within Government Office for the East of England & putting in place virtual teams for priority places.
- Ensuring effective working with local partners and inter agency working on priority places.
- Developing & monitoring action plans for the priority places and ensuring effective information is available for priority places.
- Working with partners to put in place development strategies and Local Delivery Vehicles for priority places.
- Developing an engagement strategy for & increasing the Government Office for the East of England’s visibility in Thames Gateway.
- Contributing to the development of the Government Office for the East of England policy/management towards cross Government Office working, priority places/ integration of growth & regeneration and the identification of new growth areas.
