The Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards, are now in their third year, and recognise, reward and celebrate unsung heroes who go over and above the call of duty in tackling drug use in communities across the country. The Suffolk team was named East of England winner last month for the work they have been carrying out with other agencies to remove prostitution from the streets of Ipswich.
The team brought together drug treatment services, counselling, detoxification, out of county rehabilitation, housing agencies and benefits advice to vulnerable women in Ipswich working in prostitution.
Simon Aalders, manager of the Suffolk Drugs and Alcohol Action team said:
"The success of our work is only possible with the help and commitment of partners and the local community - and we're delighted to accept it. This award recognises the bravery of the women trapped in this cycle of exploitation and their courage in seeking the help to change their lives for the better. We will continue to deliver real alternatives and support the work of partners to make a real difference in the community."
Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said: "Drug use and drug related crime have fallen in recent years. This is partly because of our enforcement, education and treatment strategy, but we could not achieve such impressive results without the dedication of all the many professionals and volunteers in England and Wales.
"These awards celebrate the great contribution they make in helping individuals overcome addictive and harmful drugs, which in turn makes a huge difference to their families and their communities."
