Come on down to "safer Goldington"

Published: Thu, 09 Oct 2008 11:30:00

All local residents welcome to community event Wednesday 15 October 2008

Residents in the Goldington area of Bedford are being urged to join thousands of people up and down the country who are linking with crime fighting professionals for a week of action to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and drug use in their communities.

Safer Goldington is taking place on Wednesday 15 October, and all local residents are invited to come along to meet community leaders, youth workers and local police, find out about exciting new projects in the area and see for themselves the newly refurbished shops, community centre and gardens.

There will be a wide variety of activities to take part in including

  • Big Brother style 'Diary Room' where people can talk about what it is like living in Goldington, the good the bad and what would make it better
  • CVs in the Bungalow - top tips on compiling your CV from experts from the Connexions service. People will be able to create and print a top quality CV on the spot and find out about local job opportunities
  • Secure fixing of registration plate to your vehicle - and security marking your bike, mobile phone and other property
  • Life through the Beer Goggles - learn about your alcohol limits by taking a look through the special goggles and see how things can look when you've had a few drinks

Sally Flint, Community Safety Manager for Bedford council, said: "We want to show the residents of Goldington that there is lots to be proud of in their community and all the hard work that is going on to make it safe place in which to live, work and play.

"Just recently we celebrated the opening of two new community gardens which have been transformed from urban eyesores into horticultural havens.

The Golden Gardens project turned two disused garage sites in Elliot Crescent and Milburn Road into communal gardens, using £80,000 donated by the People's Millions lottery fund. They include a green training area for people to grow their own food and plants as well as an open access area for all to enjoy.

Safer Goldington is on Wednesday 15th October 2008, outside Church Lane Shops, Goldington, Bedford between 3pm and 6pm.  It is supported by the Co-Operative Store and Church Lane Retailers, Bedfordshire Police, Bedford Borough Council, Bedfordshire County Council, Connexions and Youth Service, Fire Service, Alcohol Services for the Community, bpha, CoPlan Estates, Neighbourhood Watch and the Goldington Community Safety Forum.
