REGIONAL SPORTING VENUES MAKE THE GRADE FOR PRE-TRAINING PARALYMPIC ATHLETES

Published: Fri, 30 May 2008 15:30:00

Ten sporting facilities from the East of England have made it into London 2012’s Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for Paralympic Sports, which lists 170 UK venues capable of hosting teams wanting to prepare for the Paralympic Games.

The selected facilities have been chosen as a Centre of Excellence with a specialism in hosting a particular a specific sport or can accommodate a wide variety of sports. The successful venues are:

  • Norfolk: Lynnsport and Leisure park
  • Essex: Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre, Basildon Sporting Village, Harlow Gateway Sportscentre, Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre, Southend Leisure and Tennis Club, University of Essex Sports Centre
  • Bedfordshire: Bedford International Athletics Stadium, University of Bedfordshire Bedford Campus
  • Hertfordshire: Hertfordshire Sports Village Indoor facilities

Barbara Follett MP, Regional Minister for the East of England said:

"I am delighted that a number of high quality sporting venues in the East of England have been selected to feature in this Guide. We hope that the Paralympic teams and athletes will take advantage of these facilities and look forward to welcoming them to Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Essex and Hertfordshire.

Our region showed the highest level of support for the London 2012 games bid and we want to maintain that enthusiasm. The East of England has a huge amount to gain from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and hosting the teams during their pre-training is just one way that our local communities can get involved."

Extensive details of the 170 facilities in the UK will appear on a dedicated website showcasing the quality and variety of options throughout the country which will help National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) decide where to train.  The national tourism agency, Visit Britain, is developing this new website in partnership with London 2012 Organising Committee.

The Guide will be launched at the Beijing Games after which time it will be available online.  See http://www.london2012.com/news for a full regional breakdown of the Paralympic facilities.
