The final phase of the Stowmarket Relief Road will provide a new route for the B1115 on the north-eastern side of the Town. The 0.5 mile single carriageway will provide a new bridge over the Norwich to London railway line, removing a level crossing which causes traffic delays. It will also remove traffic from the existing B1115 route, improving life for local people by reducing noise and congestion.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton said:
"We are committed to investing in local transport. This new road will cut delays for drivers in Stowmarket by removing the level crossing on the London mainline. It will also reduce noise and pollution levels for local people by taking traffic off the existing B1115.
"In addition it will provide local residents with a new direct route between the Cedars Park development area and the town centre, with improved provision for pedestrians and cyclists along the route."
The Department for Transport will provide £12m, with Suffolk County Council and developers meeting the remainder of the total £21m cost. Work is due to start early next year, with the road planned to open by summer 2009. The existing B1115 will now be reclassified.
