Martin Broadhurst, chief executive of Marshall Aerospace, said, "Marshall Aerospace is delighted to be working in partnership with DLO, Lockheed Martin and Rolls Royce to provide long term, availability-based support for the Royal Air Force C-130 fleet.
"The total contract sales value is £1.52 billion, in rough terms about one-third to each partner over 24 years. The programme will see a number of new roles in Cambridge, but the key impact is less about the creation of new jobs but ensuring the long term future is secure for approximately 500 staff who work on the Hercules. We have been working on securing this contract for over two years. It is the culmination of a huge effort by a very large team."
Although it is not the first long-term integrated operational support contract awarded by the MOD, it is the first where contractors have to provide guaranteed levels of aircraft availability.
The timing of the contract was very appropriate to Marshall Aerospace's links with the aircraft, as the company is celebrating the 40th anniversary of working on the aircraft this year.
