URBAN II
The URBAN II European Regional Development Fund Programme provides £6.7 million funding for activities to tackle urban deprivation within nine wards in the City of Peterborough. The Government Office for the East of England manages the programme. Details of the Urban II Programme can be viewed using the link at the page bottom.
In April 2000 the Commission launched the URBAN II initiative to tackle economic and social regeneration in urban areas with around £75 million of EC funding being made available for 8 areas in England during 2000- 2006. In the East of England there is one URBAN II programme and it is focussed on seven wards in Peterborough town centre.
The main aims URBAN II are
1) To promote the development and implementation of pioneering strategies for sustainable economic and social regeneration in small and medium sized towns and cities or of distressed urban neighbourhoods in larger cities.
2) To enhance and exchange knowledge and experience in relation to sustainable urban regeneration and development within the European Community.
URBAN II schemes should therefore demonstrate an innovative approach to solving urban problems which can be incorporated into mainstream programmes, programmes in areas such as Peterborough are therefore demonstrative flagship areas. The total cost of the programme in Peterborough is 22.3 million euros with half coming from the EC, the remainder coming mainly from other local public sources.
Mid Term Evaluation The Mid-Term Evaluation (MTE), completed in 2003 was undertaken to establish how well the programme is delivering what it set out to deliver; test the continued relevance of programme strategy and recommend any action necessary to improve programme quality and performance. The MTE was updated in 2005 (UMTE) and a further report produced. Both the MTE final report and UMTE can be downloaded using the links provided below.
Environmental Sustainability Details of how the Peterborough URBAN II Programme promotes environmental sustainability through its design and implementation can be viewed using the link provided below.
