The partnership is coordinated by GO East and includes:
- EEDA
- EERA
- Environment Agency
- Natural England
- The region's coastal local authorities, represented by Norfolk County
Council, Essex County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council
- CoastNet
- Sustainability East
The Coastal Initiative responds to long-term challenges facing the region's
coast:
- Coexistence of high quality environments with areas in need of
regeneration
- Pressures from climate change along a vulnerable coast and the need to
adapt
- Need more cohesive approach to coastal management and policy
integration
The Initiative has focussed on:
The second Coastal Conference was held on 22 February 2010. Topics
covered and issues raised at the conference will be highlighted in the
Coastal Conference 2010 Report and supporting papers. Over the coming
year, the Initiative will build on the progress made to ensure:
- Better sharing of information, ideas and opportunities about coastal
issues
- A robust shared evidence-base to inform policy, process and
communications
- More informed, timely and effective engagement on coastal issues and
decisions by communities
- Policy change as necessary at national, regional and local level
- Effective models of adaptation which can be used beyond the region
- Aligned and streamlined governance processes for managing coastal
change.
The Initiative is working closely with Whitehall departments (through the
involvement of GO-East) to highlight issues and test proposals. The
work is also linked to a wider European programme (IMCORE) which aims to
develop and test out possible coastal adaptation policies in different
geographic areas by forming partnerships between academic thinkers,
policy-makers and practitioners.
The work of the Initiative is summarised in the Initiative's Leaflet.
