Protection of the environment requires activity on many different fronts - from acting to limit global environmental threats, such as climate change, to safeguarding individuals from the effects of poor air quality or toxic chemicals. Such actions also produce benefits for housing (through improved energy efficiency of buildings) and economic growth (through more efficient use of resources, such as re-use, recycling and recovery of waste).

The Government Office for the East of England encourages policies which safeguard and enhance environmental quality and minimise adverse environmental impacts. In order to achieve this, we work closely with regional partners who have direct responsibility for environmental issues, such as the Environment Agency, the Forestry Commission, Natural England and English Heritage as well as environmental charitable organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the World Wildlife Fund and Friends of the Earth.
We also play an active role on regional forums whose remit is to achieve a common understanding of environmental issues among both statutory and voluntary bodies and to promote the environmental aspects of sustainable development. These include the East of England Environmental Forum, the Biodiversity Forum and the Sustainability East.
