Tourism: the National Picture

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) champions good quality service for tourists, from both the UK and overseas. The Department encourages and helps the tourism industry to improve what it has to offer, with Government Offices supporting tourism initiatives to maintain the health of the tourism industry in each region.

The Government Office network works with the DCMS to help the tourism sector promote a positive image abroad and maximise the economic contribution which the tourism, creative and leisure industries can make.

Regional Development Agencies are responsible for developing a strategic direction for tourism in their region.

European Funding

European funds through both the European Regional Development Fund Objective 2 and European Social Fund have been allocated to Tourism initiatives. Government Offices develop partnerships with a wide range of regional agencies, local government, voluntary sector and private organisations to play a full part in the development of tourism in the region.

VisitBritain

VisitBritain is one of over 60 bodies funded by DCMS delivering sporting and cultural support to the public. Its mission is to build the value of tourism by creating world-class destination brands and marketing campaigns. It will also build partnerships with – and provide insights to – other organisations that have a stake in British and English tourism. Government Offices facilitate the link between the regions, DCMS and VisitBritain, to promote a shared understanding of regional tourism needs.
