Tourism - Blackpool Tower, Blackpool

Tourism is important to the North West economy and is identified as a priority growth sector by the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA). Government Office for the North West works with the Northwest Development Agency and the region’s five tourist boards to promote and support tourism in the region.

2008 is an important year for the North West.  Liverpool is Capital of Culture 2008 and Manchester has a series of world class sporting events – including the UEFA World Cup, The  Fina World Short course Swimming Championships and the UCI Track Cycling Championships 2008 at the Manchester Velodrome in East Manchester

 

The North West’s many other tourism assets include:

  • fine landscapes including the Lake District
  • an impressive Roman and industrial heritage
  • Blackpool – Britain’s top seaside resort
  • world famous golf courses, music heritage, sporting events and football clubs
  •  

The 5 sub regional tourist boards are:

  • Cumbria Tourist Board
  • Cheshire/Warrington Tourist Board
  • The Lancashire/Blackpool Tourist Board
  • Marketing Manchester – the Tourist Board for Greater Manchester
  • The Mersey Partnership – The Tourist Board for Merseyside
